Wilbur the Winnebago

I started this Blog with no special plan. Now since fellow Classic Winnebago members are looking at it I had better keep going with it. Blogs are a great way to share pictures and info. Right now I am thinking back on last Summer. Weeks of just relaxing on the Oregon Coast. This picture of my wife shows how we vacation. I'm pretty sure we would spend a whole day in a place like this. With our beach cabin parked right next to the beach what else is there to life.

2007 Summer Oregon Coast video

Sunday 2:00 PM
I have wanted to make some videos of Wilbur relaxing on the Oregon Coast. This Summer was great. My wife now thinks we can just hop in Wilbur and drive the 60 miles to Lincoln City for a relaxing get away.

Let me know what you think.

Oregon Lighthouse tour 2007

This Summer my wife and I ran away. What else can I say. We put around 3000 miles on Wilbur without any real problems. We spent the best part of 7 weeks on the Oregon Coast. We would drive about 70 miles to the beach and either head North or South. There are nine lighthouses and we were able to tour most of them. Some are not open or can't be driven to. One is on an Island. Anyway here are some pictures of our outings.

Pacific City 7/18/07

I did finally agree to visit Thousand Trails for 2 nights. The free gifts made me do it and we were in the area anyway. So we drive West from Tillamook and see the very short light house at Cape Mears. Great drive but when the road sign says "secure your load" you might get a clue.

Seaside Oregon , 7/17/07

You have to stop at the cheese factory in Tillamook for the free cheese samples and ice cream. So we are on our way to Seaside and of course make stops for anything we like. This traveling without kids can really be nice, oh we do miss the kids in case they are reading this. We go shopping and look around at whatever we want to.

Tillamook Oregon, 7/16/07

We spent a week on the Oregon Coast in the condos from 7/6/07- 7/13/07. Now we came home, took care of some business and off we go again. This time we drive the 30 miles to Spirit Mountain Casino for lunch. You know my wife and I like this Vacation stuff. We head to the buffet and enjoy a long lunch only to meet friends and of course a Winnebago couple who use to have a '72 Super Chieftian once. Now they have one of those "newer" Winnebago's. We share stories, they had seen Wilbur in the parking lot and thought how clean it looks. Anyway after a good amount of time we head farther West to the Coast. This time we turn North towards Tillamook. We stop along the way to enjoy life and finaly pull into a very quiet RV place at the Tillamook Airport. Now you might think this would be noisy but we only saw 1 plane take off out of the 2 nights we spent there. OK $5.00 a night was the reason we(I) stopped but really a nice place. http://www.potb.org/rv-park.htm

Oregon Coast Day 6 - 6/29/07

Left the Casino and drove a short way to the Cooks Chasm pull out. We really fell in love with this place on the way down South. Had breakfast here and enjoyed the view. Back to Lincoln City with stops for whatever we wanted to see. You can see Wilbur in the background waiting for us.

Oregon Coast Day 5 - 6/28/07

We drove back to Florence where we checked out the old town. Filled up with gas, I don't know what I hate worse, the full holding tank or the empty gas tank... Hung around the town and took life easy before driving back (it is almost 1 mile from town to the three rivers casino) for the night.

Oregon Coast Day 4 - 6/27/07

We started the day with a full holding tank, yuck. OK so the gauge doesn't work for the holding tanks yet but when things are full you know it. So we decided to pull into the PAY RV Park. Sometimes things like a working toilet are needed and since the RV park is only 1 year old we paid end enjoyed the showers and cable TV, WIFI and all. This was Wilburs first real RV park and I think he liked it, I know my wife and I did. These pictures are of Shore Acres and Sunset Bay State Parks.

The Oregon Coast Day 3 6/26/07

After one night in the 3 Rivers casino in Florence Oregon we drove towards Coos Bay. Not very good Ocean views from Florence to Coos Bay so we mostly drove right to the State Parks we wanted to see, Sunset Bay and Shore acres. These are "must see" if you are in the area. After a great day of seeing things we like we pulled into the Mills Casino for the night of FREE camping.

A week on the Oregon Coast day 2 - 6/25/07

We left the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City and headed South on 101. For breakfast we stopped at Boiler Bay State park. This has been a great place to watch for whales and this day was good too. My wife and I made coffee and toast while we watched a few whales. After breakfast we traveled on and stopped at a few places. One great find was a placed called Cooks Chasm. This was just a wide spot in the road but very nice trails down to the water. Another great place we stopped was the Heceta Light house. Somehow we have taken an interest in light houses this year and try to tour them when we can. Stayed for lunch and then on to the Casino in Florence. Another FREE night at the Casino gravel lot. We did sign up for the players card and got $5.00 of free play on the slots. I ran my $5.00 up to about $7.00 before moving to the video poker where I ran it up to $0.00. My wife ran her free money up to $8.00 and cashed out. I guess she knows when to quit.

A week on the Oregon Coast June Day 1--6/24/07

Since I first had "Wilbur" towed home 3 years ago I had plans of spending lots of time on the Coast. Well with the recent changes in our lives my wife agreed to start with one week and see how it goes. One big thing I did was to scub out the fridge. With parts from #230 I made the fridge look real good and it worked real good. We left home after lunch on Sunday and drove to Lincoln City. A short time later we arrived. A kite festival was going on. Lots of people, so we shopped in the factory outlet awhile. My wife can really shop. They we drove to the D Lake state park on the Beach where the most people fly. I bet we were there for 4 hours watching kites, taking walks and of course eating and relaxing. Then when we got tired we drove to the local Casino for the FREE parking in the RV lot.

The Old Onan is out

Wow you should see how much room I found. Yea the old Onan did take up a lot of room and was not the lightest thing I have ever moved. Now to put a wire and plug on the existing wires to the new generator.

Swapping fridge doors

Since it looks like #230 will be heading South (or South East) I got to looking at the fridge. The door liner did not have cracks in it like my '73 Indian door. So I took both doors apart and took the best parts to make a good one for my '73. The outside of the door is wood and darker on the '73. Looks good so far. Of course my wife will have it cleaned to within an inch of its life before she will use it. Next job is removing the old Onan genset to make room for the tiny Kipor 1000.

#230 Might be moving on

For those of you that know my other Bago is an old one, the 230th Winnebago to be exact, was to make a trip to Ohio but the cost of shipping made it unlikley. So now I think my brother might be up to the challange, I hope. Well if I give it to him he can't tell mom I took his money. Time will tell if he wants it after he takes a good look at it.

Oregon Coast Casino trip

My plan for the last week of June is to stay at three Casinos along the Oregon Coast. Start out at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, then drive South to Florence and stay at the Three Rivers Casino then South to the Mill Casino in Coos Bay. The plan is to take a week and stay in the FREE lots at the Casinos. We have several places planned to see along the way. It's been a long time since we have to some of these places so I think a week might not be long enough but my wife thinks we should start with one week planned and see how it goes. http://www.casinocamper.com/Oregon.htm for a list of Oregon Casinos.

Comming home from the Coast outing

Today we came home from a couple of nights at the Coast. Wilbur ran great and no problems other than a couple of leaks in all the rain and wind. Above the windshield must have a leak and then the bathroom ceiling vent/escape hatch had drips. Friday was great weather but then Saturday about 4:30AM I heard the rain. Rain off and on Saturday turned into drier weather on Sunday. This was one of those relaxing trips to the Coast with thime to read and play cards with my wife. The empty nest stuff is great, er I mean I sure miss the kids.....thats in case they read this. Wilbur is unloaded and ready to put in the garage. I might have to wash him since all the rain and wet roads kind of make for a dirty outside. Now to try posting pictures.....

WIFI in Lincoln City Oregon

I did find out that the City Library has a good WIFI signal outside the building. Most of the time I pull into Burger King and connect to their WIFI but this time the libaray across the street came in good. So if you are ever in town try the libary. They have computers to use inside and WIFI outside.

Saturday at the Coast

Yesterday my wife and I took off from home about 3:00 PM and headed for the Oregon Coast. We arrived about 4:30 PM and parked at the Chinook Winds Casino where we decided to partake of the Friday Sea Food Buffet. That is still the best bet to place there. All the Crabs, shrimp and Salmon a person could stand. Hardly room left for desert but always room for desert. Then we drove over to our favorite State Park for a long deserved time of watching the water and finally seeing the Sun setting into the ocean. It's not every day you get a good sun set because of clouds and fog. Then back to the RV parking lot at the Casino for the night. Free parking for RV's and a secure place. Several people were there for a pool tournament. We did go in and see probably 50 tables set up.
Today we got up and drove back to the same State park for a breakfast of coffee, fruit and toasted english muffins. That is a quick and good way to start the day. Today is raining and not at all like Friday's sun. This weekend is the City wide garage sale. We did find some stuff but since it was wet we didn't enjoy it that much. Well I better get back to my vacation so take care, Les

More maintenance for Wilbur

Today was the day to check tire pressure and propane but even more happened. First I wanted a hose for my compressor that would reach all around Wilbur with out moving the compressor so I went out and bought a 50' one. Aired up all 7 tires. Then I decided to grease the chassis. First I had to buy another tube of grease, then I had to relearn how to install the tube into the grease gun. So after a long talk with the grease gun it acted right and worked. Then I noticed that when I had reinstalled the drive shaft, after it was towed to my house after buying it, the marks I made before removing it were one notch off. Things almost lined up. Anyway all is good now. I drove it after all this and think it drives better. Probably gets better gas mileage too. Oregon Coast or Bust!!!!

Getting Wilbur ready for the first outing of the year

Tonight I put some water in the tanks and checked out the fresh water system. I had installed a water heater bypass last Fall and now with the water pump on I had a small leak under the table seat. Happy to find that before I found wet carpet, or worse my wife find the wet carpet. Tommorrow will be tire pressure and propane checks. It's only 60 miles to the coast and half way is a casino with free camping if I have have any trouble. Wish me luck.

Back from Seattle

Well we spent the week down town Seattle. With trips to local tourist places like Pikes market and shopping centers we came away with the trunk full and wallets empty. I just added that incase my wife reads this. She is a bargin shopper and wants to retire soon so saving money is a good thing. Now that its April I plan to take the old Bago out for some Coast trips. I made sure to fill the gas tanks before I send whats left to Uncle Sam.

Is it Spring break yet?

This month I plan to visit Seattle and enjoy the city and also meet some of the Classic Winnebago club members. Next to payday, vacations are my next favorite thing. My bago recived new curtains the other day. My wife found a piece of material around the house and we turned it into new front curtains. She really likes Wilbur and this Summer we have several vacations planned.

dory cove picture after fire

Dory Cove burned down

Now you might think one less place to eat on the Oregon Coast is not a problem but this place is next to a State park where we like to day camp. Just think of spending the day on the beach and only a short walk away is a great place to eat. I think this place made my wife enjoy camping in my (our) old Winnebago even better. Anyway this place is gone for now.

A Valentine get away

Yes it was a well deserved get away. The Oregon coast was beautiful on the day before Valentines day. Sunny and almost 60. The sun set from our Condo was the perfect way to end the day. 2 nights was a short but very enjoyable vacation. After 3 weeks of intense hospital time and a slow recovery of my mother-in-law we took off. Now it's back to work and life today..........

Out of the hospital

Grandma (mother-in-law) is out of the hospital and in a skilled care facility. I hope things improve soon. 16 days at Salem Hospital is a long time and all the doc's say she needs to get out of there before she picks up something like another illness or something.

RV shows this weekend

The Worlds fastest RV right here in Salem, OR and I could care less. My '73 Indian is just fine for me. The next vacation for me will be Condo Camping anyway. For Valentines day my wife and I will get over to the Oregon Coast for a couple of nights in the condos. That is if my mother-In-law gets along with this hospital stay OK. She has several health problems and now either a Stroke or Bells Palsy or some of each. Anyway maybe when I retire I can post a blog everyday and have vacation stuff to write about. Until then will write when I can.

It's Winter here in the valley

We don't get much snow or even cold weather in the Willamette Valley. This week has been different though. Freezing every night for a week and even several days never above 32. This Summer we plan on warm days and cool nights so with that thought in mind I can hold on a few more months till Spring...

Winterizing Wilbur

Winter is here and I decided to put a water heater by-pass kit on the old Winnebago. This weekend is a Boy Scout campout and the temp is planned to be well below freezing. The kit looked like an easy fix and at $18.95 it was within budget. My heater is under one of the dinette seats. The only problem was not a bunch of room to turn wrenches inside the seat area. Last year I got the drain plug out of the water heater for the first time. Now I need to blow out the lines and pump some anti-freeze into them.

Jury duty day and Travel talk

It finally happened, Jury Duty. At the ripe old age of 53 I finally had to show up at the Court House for jury duty. Never got past the call after 5:00PM the night before to see if I needed to show up. Anyway I got to watch a video on patriotism and how the court system works. Then it was wait and wait. Well I did talk travel with a retired guy who has a motor home. We talked how the Oregon Coast and Casinos were great places to visit. About the time I had told him all about my winnebago repairs the phone rang and the trial was changed from a jury trail to a Judge making the judgement. Oh well back to work fixing houses.

Boy Scout tree recycle

This is the second and last weekend of Christmas tree recycling for our Boy Scout Troop. The old Winnebago (Wilbur) was used again this year as an office for the event. Last year was wet most of the time but this year was dry except for this last day of the recycle. The adults of the Troop learned about how nice the small electric heater works in Wilbur. We have used the Mr Heater propane heater but that one seems to produce mosture on the windows when used. Next weekend will be Camp Farm Nut. It is a time for Scouts to work on Merit Badges and camp out close to home. One Scout leader has a farm with lots of Hazel nuts so thats how this event was named. The Web site is working at http://the-handier-man.com/ Take a look.

Oregon coast aquarium trip

We had a great wet and windy trip to the coast yesterday. My daughter really likes the coast and since she is in the OSU marine biology program I'm sure she will spend lots of time at the coast. The weather was just windy on the way to the coast but turned very wet and windy soon after getting to the aquarium. There is lots to see inside so only the long walk to the car was very wet. It was so wet and windy on the way home my wife and daughter did not even shop very long at the factory outlet in Lincoln City. Good thing we didn't take the old motor home over since the wind makes for very exciting driving.
